Would love a clarification on how to use Notes vs Threads vs Chat!

This is a really good question Steph! I’m thinking about this a lot myself as I’m posting things and then realising “oh crap, that would have been better over there!”

Oooh, yes! Excited for more of Farrah's wisdom especially on the new notes feature and how to plan content without overcommiting ourselves. ✨

If she can teach us how to stop overcommitting ourselves then she’s going to change my life 😂

Ooh yeah! I’d like to know how I can use private substacks for my art newsletter -- what’s the process for getting people to sign up? I think it would be different from a normal substack? I’m guessing non-subscribers won’t be able to see any of the posts...Farah had also mentioned something about having different sections in one publication and allowing people to sign up only for the updates they are interested in receiving. I haven’t been able to find out how that works. I have a tarot substack and a reading substack. It would be nice to have it all under one unberella if possible.

Yes, sections looks so cool but I’ve not had a chance to play with it much either! What’s your thinking grind wanting to keep your art newsletter private?

Shinjini's avatar

I want that to be more of a newsletter. I’m trying to move away from mailchimp, keep things lean considering I barely earn anything from it!

Sara's avatar

Ah, understood! Mailchimp is honestly a kafkaesque nightmare behind the scenes now 🙈

haha! Yes! I want simple + easy. And if it’s free, that’s even better, especially since this is more like a passion/hobby thing. 🙈

Okay, I've finally come over here after pondering over it for a year. I've been lurking as a reader for a while 😶‍🌫️ what I'd love to know more about is the bones of Substack. I feel that there's a mystery to the magic of it, and it almost feels to good to be true... I have trust issues clearly 🤣

There's also the juxtaposition of the, *yes, definitely niche* and the *yes, have all the things under one roof* these two things can be seen as polar opposites. You can probably tell I'm still figuring out what to write about.

Anyway, great to find you here!

Oh this is exciting! I'd love to know more about some of the new features that have been coming out, like Notes. This seems a lot like an Instagram-meets-Twitter type of sharing feed, and I'm really excited to see where it leads. Would love to know more about the intention behind a space like this, how you see it differing from the Chat function, and how you/she predict people will use it!

I feel like at least 50% of the reason behind notes was just “eff Elon” and honestly I support this fictional mission statement! 🙈 Twitter dying is leaving a gap for sure and it makes so much sense given that Twitter was so huge with writers and most have decamped over here. But yes - still sooo much potential to unfold!

I also will fully back an unofficial “eff Elon” mission statement 😂 I wasn’t very active on twitter cause I found it stressful, but I’m really excited to see where this goes!

It seems likely that Notes will avoid the stress factor as everyone is linked to their pages here in such a tangible way. For now, at least!

Im all for an alternative to Twitter, I hope that notes can be a supportive and interesting place here instead of the unpleasantness and doomscrolling that twitter has become

I’d love to know more about notes too. Who sees the notes we post? What if we don’t already have a ‘writers community’ on substack? Or if our subscribers are mainly viewing our newsletters on email? Can Notes help us widen our reader base? And how?

Really good questions! From playing today it seems to be (at least) partially suggestion based so I think it’s going to be a yes but will be good to ask for more detail

Hi, I've been blogging for a number of years on my website and wondering about transferring bits over to my substack are there concerns about duplicate content? Would it be ok to use sections, or split posts up and give them a revamp? It will take me time to learn what my substack audience enjoys.

Are you noticing popular days and times for posting?

Also are there any statistics for Substacks growth?

Looking forward to listening, Thank you !

Hi there - I’d like to know how people can find you on Substack. I mean is it like a search engine, does it work with Google’s SEO, do I have to organically attract people to it? Time is limited these days, so I’m trying to find out where should I pour my energy... 🤍

I’m really trying to figure out if it makes sense to use Substack in a more visual way. I know it’s a writer’s platform, but are there visual artists using it without feeling like it’s a square peg/round hole situation?

As a potter there are certainly things I COULD write about but I don’t know how often, how much.

I’m still very drawn to Substack, it’s such an appealing platform…

Thanks so much for this! Been thinking a lot about the path to paid...Farrah's recommendation to go paid straight away slightly scared me. I have given myself a year of building before going paid only, as a means to explore what this space can be for me and to also build an audience. Is anyone else giving themselves a time frame structure before taking the leap?
