This was so gorgeous Sara! I listened to it whilst baking birthday cake and can’t do that whilst reading. I struggle to read and take things in at the moment anyway so this was perfect.

Sorry about your flood struggles. Exact same issue here, happy to zoom and share findings - if you figure it out let me know though as we’re no closer to a fix other than rip the kitchen out and tank it, not my first choice, I was pretty happy with the idea of a channel a la your previous owners! Sending love from a wet Yorkshire to a damp but infinitely more charming France. X

Oh no! Not the dreaded basement flooding! I feel like a theoretical expert on this now after doing SO much internet-based research on the topic 😂 Is it hydropressure? Sending dry and warm thoughts!!

Love this - making toast in wellies sounds great! This is lovely and natural - maybe you could start talking to the spiders and politely ask them to leave? My husband has on occasion asked unwanted guests to leave his workshop and they did actually listen! He told a snake if didn’t t leave he would have to deal with it. Well .. he promptly left.. Birds, mice .. yip - worked every time! you never know ;)

Thanks for sharing! Alex x

Hahaa no way! I love this idea and I have zero to lose in trying it, right? Do you think it works en masse or do I have to ask every spider individually? I'm game either way but it would be great to just buy a megaphone and politely redirect them all in one go 😂

how funny - yes you could have them file in line and marched off into the wilderness 😂

Fully understand your bug and spider fear... I have it too! But after 12 years of living in the countryside I can tell you that a lot had changed once I was brave enough to see what the spider did while meeting me. It ran away! It ran as quickly as it could! I had then realized it was scared of me! And it made me feel so much better – there are two scared creatures in this situation ;-) Not only me :-) Have a nice day!

Ah, I really love this sweetly compassionate take ❤️ Practiced this last night with a spider and it definitely helped! I also tried really hard to see it as cute. I'm sure to a mama spider he was adorable... Let's call this a work in progress for now! haha

Maybe you could do a poll to get views? As I’m concerned, i’d rather either that it’s a proper podcast so that I can then listen to anywhere using a podcast app (as Substack voice notes can’t be exported to other apps) or a much shorter quick voice note. Sorry about all the kitchen problems.

Good points Stephanie! Shorter makes sense for this format. I’m definitely a multi-Tasker and like to listen while doing other things on my phone, so the lock in would bother me too. Lots to experiment with!

I loved the sound of the rain. We had an insane downpour here in Northern Italy today too with thunder and lightening and the works. I loved the dog pause. I loved the reflections on the house. I'm here for that. I LOVED the image of you in your beautiful dress reaping. I legitimately laughed out loud. A recording closer to 10 minutes would be better for me but then, I do have a 2 year old and a 4 year old so...

The weather here has been pretty crazy for May! Hope the thunderstorms are a sign of some sunshine to come for us both! Yeah, a few people have mentioned that it was a bit long for the format which I think is a good call. Similar to written posts - our instinct is often to make things long and exhaustive but short and sweet is often better for our readers and easier to create!

I love this informal format and prefer it over voice overs (however recognising they serve different purposes, just didn’t feel good for me and my substack so I started adding voice notes too). Thank you Sara!

The kitchen flooding and the solution the previous owners had is a story you don’t hear often. Hope you’ll soon have dry feet when cooking .

I’ll have to check out some of your voice note posts too! It’s a good point - there’s a very different vibe to them than to voice overs, and they do serve different purposes. I’d like to be able to add transcriptions to voice notes too though, ideally. Lots to play around with!

Oh yes for inclusivity a transcript would be a dream. I currently don’t see how that could be added easily?

Apart from externally recording, getting a transcript written through another tool, adding the transcript to a page that’s liked to from the text above / below the voiceover 🤯

Maybe I’m missing a key feature in substack but don’t see how it’s achieved easily.

If you find a solution Sara, please share 🙏

I have my voice notes as a podcast. It means I have to record separately and then upload into Substack but it also means there's access to a transcript. It makes the page format different too but could be a possible workaround if the transcript is a priority?

It would be suuuuper easy for Substack to add transcription to voice notes, I imagine, seeing as they already have the tech. (Spoken like somebody who's never done a minute's programming in my life, but still...). Let's all submit it as a feature request!!

Listened to this on my walk, loved getting to hear your voice and hear this update!

On the spider note, I have TERRIBLE arachnophobia, and every year we have these spiders called giganticas show up in our library (of course they’re in my favorite room of the house). Last year, my husband recommended that I start calling them “fluffykins” to make them less scary, and I actually think it’s working a little bit. I still don’t like them, but something about saying “oh there’s a fluffykins on the ceiling” is less traumatic to my nervous system 😂
